Moving into your new home should be an exciting time for the whole family. However, if you move and find your valuables missing or broken, it can really put a damper on things. Of course, accidents do happen, but there are precautionary measures you can take to make sure your valuables arrive to your new home safely.

How to pack your valuables for a safe move:

  1. Determine what is valuable and what is not.
  2. Be sure to take inventory (lists and photos).
  3. Pack appropriately.
  4. Check your list twice.

Determine what is valuable and what is not.

Before you can protect your valuables, you must determine what is valuable and what is not. What are the things that are irreplaceable and would cause stress if lost? Your valuables aren’t always the things with the highest price tag. Sometimes, your valuables are family photos, heirlooms, or items that belong to your children. Once you determine what those items are, you can organize, pack, and transport them accordingly.

Be sure to take inventory (list and photos).

What better way to remember what you packed than to make a list and take photos. If something bad happens to your valuables during a move, you’ll want to have evidence of the original state of the item for insurance purposes. Taking inventory might take extra time, but it is worth doing.

Pack appropriately.

Are your labeling your boxes and packing with bubble wrap? If not, you may want to head to the store and pick up these packing necessities. Protecting your valuables with some extra cushion will keep them safe during the move. Boxes can be dropped, knocked over in the moving van, or handled roughly. Anything you can do to protect your boxes from damage will help ensure that your belongings arrive in the same condition you packed them in.

Check your list twice.

As you are moving packed boxes into vehicles or a moving van, it is important that you check your inventory list and mark what boxes are going where and with who. Keeping a list of your belongings and who they are going with will help you stay organized and stress-free when you arrive at your new home.

Now that you know how to keep your valuables safe during a move, we wish you a lifetime of happiness in your new home!
